Hi everyone, my name is Alex, and I am 16 (nearly 17) years of age.
I have a mild (ish) form of Beckers Muscular Dystrophy, which itself is a mild type of MD. It means I cant do as much physical activity as most other people (but i can still do things like walk for about 2 hours, do bike riding every now and then, well do anything really), but cant do alot of physical exercise. I also have large calf muscles, which I think might be starting to notice through my trousers.
I should consider myself lucky I dont have a worse form of MD, but sometimes I get quite down about it.
My friends do not know about my problem, and I keep it a secret from most people (except family of course). The stupid reason why I havent told anyone about my problem is because I think they would treat me differently, treat me like im 'special' etc etc. Alot of people at my school are quite shallow, which doesnt help.
Unlike most pupils at my school, I have never had a girlfriend (im am still young though, so who knows what the future holds), partly because of my problem, but also because of my lack of confidence.
I have NEVER met another person with my rare problem, or any other forms of MD.
Sometimes wish I was 'normal' (whatever that means), and didnt have my problem. I keep telling myself that without BMD, i would enjoy life. Obviously, this is a stupid thing to say but I cant help thinking it.
Well, I would like to know if they are any other people with Beckers Muscular Dystrophy on here?
Thanks
Alex, Essex, UK
And thanks for letting me share my story on your forum |

Hi Alex welcome to the forum. Where abouts in Essex are you? I live near Chelmsford.
All of us have experienced moments of wishing of being "normal" especially at your age, I know I did!
Give your friends a chance they might just suprise you!
You've come to the right place for help, support and fun.
